Exit & Emergency Light Testing

Emergency and Exit Lighting Testing According to AS/NZS 2293: Ensuring Safety and Compliance

The AS/NZS 2293 standard, which consists of Parts 1, 2, and 3, sets out the procedures for testing and maintaining emergency and exit lighting systems. Adhering to these guidelines is crucial for ensuring that these systems provide adequate illumination during emergencies. Below are the key testing procedures we follow:

Monthly Functional Testing

  • Operation Check: We test the functionality of each emergency light and exit sign by simulating a power outage or using the built-in test button.
  • Performance Verification: We ensure that all lights activate properly and remain illuminated for the required duration as specified by the standard.
  • Documentation: We record the results of the functional tests to maintain accurate documentation for compliance and future reference.

Quarterly Testing

  • Duration Test: We perform a duration test to verify that the emergency lights and exit signs stay on for the required time while operating on battery power.
  • Visual Inspection: We visually inspect all lights for any signs of damage, malfunction, or obstructions that could impair performance.
  • Cleaning: Any dirt or debris affecting the lights’ performance is removed to ensure optimal operation.
  • Record Keeping: We document the results of the duration test and visual inspection for compliance with regulatory requirements.

Annual Testing

  • Comprehensive System Test: We conduct a full discharge test of the emergency lighting system’s batteries to ensure that all lights activate and remain operational for the required duration.
  • Battery Condition: We assess the condition of all batteries and replace any that are defective or nearing the end of their lifecycle.
  • Component Inspection: We inspect the entire emergency lighting system, including wiring, lamps, and control units, for wear, damage, or defects.
  • Standards Compliance: We ensure that the emergency lighting system complies with the requirements outlined in AS/NZS 2293 Parts 1, 2, and 3.
  • Detailed Reporting: We record the results of the annual tests, along with any maintenance or repairs performed, ensuring thorough documentation for compliance and future audits.

Benefits of Regular Testing

By following the testing procedures detailed in AS/NZS 2293 Parts 1, 2, and 3, building owners and managers can ensure that their emergency and exit lighting systems are properly maintained and ready to provide reliable illumination during emergencies. This enhances the safety of building occupants and ensures compliance with safety regulations.

Standards Compliance

All testing activities are conducted in alignment with:

  • ISO 9001:2015 – Ensuring quality management and consistency in all processes.
  • ISO/IEC 17020:2012 – Providing assurance that inspections are carried out with technical competence and impartiality.

By adhering to these standards, we ensure the reliability, safety, and compliance of emergency lighting systems.
